Most small dogs such as the POMS and Chis, seem to prefer a ball smaller than a tennis ball. Something that is easier to collect and transport.
I have a small rubber ball (not too small, or in the throat) put my children so well and they also support a small ball of yarn type of cat.
Try a smaller version and see if you get the hang of it too.
